1.0 - Introduction

Crafting is a skill used by many in RuneScape to help give them an edge in combat or make some quick cash. Players often use Crafting to make items like amulets, armour which can enhance your fighting stats, or give you protection. Using crafting you can also make items to help you explore places like lanterns or hold food like bowls and pie dishes.

2.0 - Crafting Equipment

You will need a number of supplies to begin crafting. To create silver and gold jewelry you will need moulds and for leatherworking, you will obviously need leather as well as a needle and thread. It is important that you are familiar with these things to make your crafting careers much easier.

A crafting store will carry most of the supplies in its stocks, but you will have to obtain other crafting supplies or equipment from other areas around RuneScape. This table will show you where to get the supplies that you will need.

3.0 - Forms of Crafting

Crafting comes in many forms. Here are all the uses.

3.1 - Pottery

Pottery is a skill that is not very useful at the higher levels, however many lower levels may find it helpful in leveling up their crafting. Here is the basic method of crafting pottery.

  1. Mine some clay and use a bucket of water on it to make soft clay.
  2. Use the soft clay with a pottery wheel and choose what you want to make
  3. Use the unfired item with the pottery oven. Beware there is a chance of failing when you fire the object.

You can find Pottery wheels and ovens in the Crafting Guild, Barbarian Village, in the western part of East Ardougne, and in Rellekka. This table shows all the forms of pottery.

3.2 - Spinning

Spinning is yet another basic form of crafting; however, it plays a useful role in the world of crafting and others skills as well.

Three items can be spin into a form of string. When "Wool" from a sheep is spun, you will get a ball of wool. Use the balls of wool on amulets or wherever else needed. The best location for flax is found in Lletya; there is a field of flax just outside the bank. Alternatively, you can find flax in Taverley, Seers' Village, Lunar Isle and the Tree Gnome Stronghold. Spin flax into bowstrings. Finally, the Magic Tree Root, obtained whilst farming, will produce a string for the Amulet of Nature.

You can find spinning wheels in the Lumbridge Castle, Falador, Crafting Guild, Barbarian Village, Seers' Village, Lletya, Sophanem, and in tree houses in the Tree Gnome Stronghold It's worth noting that if you are getting flax from a bank and spinning it, it is fastest to do so in Lumbridge Castle. However, it's best to make bowstrings in Seers' Village if you are picking your own flax, because the spinning wheel is on the way to the bank.

Below is a table showing the items that you can spin:

3.3 - Cape Dyeing

Dyeing capes gives a little bit of crafting experience. You can dye them red, blue, yellow, orange, green or purple. To make dyes follow the steps below. Once you have the dye color of your choice, use the bottle of dye on your cape.

  1. Collect the ingredients
  2. Red dye: 3 Redberries. [South of Varrock]
  3. Yellow dye: 2 Onions. [Farmer Fred's farm; Melzar's Maze]
  4. Blue dye: 2 Woad leaves. [Wyson the Gardner in Falador Park]
  5. Take them along with 5gp to Aggie the Witch in Draynor Village.
  6. Ask her to make them.
  7. Color Combinations include orange (red and yellow), green (blue and yellow) and purple (blue and red).
3.4 - Leatherwork

Leatherworking is one of the most popular forms of crafting. It involves obtaining the hide of a dead dragon, snake or cow, tanning it and then sewing the leather to produce armour.

Killing cows, you can obtain cowhides. Killing bush snakes, you can obtain snake hides, Bush snakes jump out of dense jungle in the Tai Bwo Wannai Cleanup Mini-game. Killing respectively colored dragons, you can obtain green, blue, red or black dragonhides.

To tan your hides simply take them to a tanner in Crafting Guild, Al-Kharid, Rangers' Guild or Canifis. They will charge you 1gp to make regular leather and 3gp to create hard leather. If you bring them a dragonhide, they will ask 20gp each. In return, you will receive your leather. The tanner in Al-Kharid is the closest to the bank and there is a crafting shop in the town.

Now that you have your leather, you require a needle and a bunch of thread. Use your needle on the leather and craft your desired piece of armour. You use one thread for every four hides, so make sure you have enough.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Kebbit Claws

To create studded chaps and body, simple make soft leather body chaps. Then smith some studs (1 steel bar = 5 studs), which requires level 36 smithing, and add them to the pieces of leather armour.

If you wish to add spikes to your vambraces and add +2 strength to them, then use kebbit claws on your vambraces. The only way to get kebbit claws is by either hunting kebbits or buying them from another player. The below table shows each spiked vambrace and its stat bonuses.

  1. Get some silver ores and a mould for the item you wish to make.
  2. Smelt your silver ore in a furnace to create a silver bar.
  3. With the proper mould in your inventory, use the silver bar on the furnace, and a menu will appear where you can choose what item to make.

3.6 - Gems and Golden Jewelry

You can obtain gems in RuneScape as drops from monsters, through mining, or stealing from various stalls or vaults. Opal, jade, and red topaz are obtained by panning in the Digsite area or through mining the gem rocks in Shilo Village. You can only obtain Uncut Dragonstones by using a crystal key on the chest in Taverley (or buying from another player). Certain very strong monsters can drop cut Dragonstones.

To cut a gem, simply use a chisel on it and if you have the required crafting level to do so, you cut the gem. There is now a "Cut X" option to make for easier gem cutting. You can use cut gems in the creation of jewelry and bolt tips.

Golden jewelry is one of the most rewarding areas of crafting. When you use magic to enchant your jewelry, you will gain new abilities such as teleporting or extra strength in combat. In RuneScape, it is possible to make rings, necklaces and amulets out of gold. Here are the steps to making golden jewelry:

  1. Get a ring, necklace or amulet mould as well as some gold ore.
  2. Smelt the ore into a gold bar by using it on a furnace.
  3. If you wish to put a gem into your item, have a cut gem in your inventory along with the gold.
  4. Use the gold bar on the furnace, a screen will come up where you can choose which item to make. On this screen, there is now a "Craft X" option to create ease when creating jewelry.
  5. You can craft an amulet; use a ball of wool on it first so it can hang from your neck. This can now be done with easy with a "String X" option.

When your golden jewelry is complete, you can then enchant it. Please note that only members can enchant rings and necklaces. For more information on enchanting, visit the magic guide.

3.7 - Glasswork

Glass working is not very popular as it is so complicated, but can be very useful in certain situations. Here are the basic steps to glass working:

  1. Use a bucket with a sand pit to get a bucket of sand.
  2. Use seaweed with a range to get soda ash.
  3. Use your bucket of sand or your soda ash from your inventory on a furnace and you will receive molten glass.
  4. Get a glass blowing pipe. One spawns in a house on Entrana. You can also get one from Grandpa Jack's house, located in Hemenster. Use the glass blowing pipe on the molten glass and choose which item you wish to make. Note that a "Make X" option now makes your glass making experience more enjoyable.

Seaweed spawns on the shores of the river in Shilo Village, on the coast of Entrana, or you can catch it using a big net. Seaweed can be bought from the charter ship members for 2gp each, along with soda ash. You could also pick up seaweed from the spawn in Piscatoris Fishing Colony, and use the big nets to catch monkfish at the same time. You can fill your bucket with sand on Entrana, in Yanille, Zanaris (The Lost City), Shilo Village or Rellekka. Bert's sand service from the Hand In The Sand, The quest is also useful for collecting buckets of sand.

Alternately, after completing the Dream Mentor quest, you can use Lunar Magic to make molten glass. The Superglass Make spell, which requires level 77 Magic, 2 Astral runes, 6 Fire runes and 10 Air runes, can transform instantly turn your soda ash and buckets of sand into molten glass. It is an instantaneous transformation, but it consumes your buckets. Wield a staff or either Air or Fire, and withdraw 13 buckets of sand and soda ashes, and you should end up with up to 22 molten glasses. This is much quicker than using a furnace, but as mentioned before, you will lose your buckets.

4.0 - Training Methods

This section outlines what to craft as you level and your options. Each level frame has two sections: Members as well as Non-Members.

Level 1 - 16

Non-Members: Start by crafting gloves. Although its requirements are only level 1 crafting, it gives very fast experience. Since you have not met the requirements to enter the Crafting Guild, you cannot enjoy the equipment located in the guild. Start by going to a Cow Field (Located at Lumbridge or beside Crafting Guild and start killing Cows, which drop cowhides. Collect roughly 200 hides by banking them once your inventory is full. Head to Al-Kharid and start crafting your gloves. Experiments have proven that no other way is better than crafting Gloves at level 1.

Members: Similar to above. There is no low level members-only crafting technique, which beats crafting gloves.

Level 16 - 28

Non-Members: You can now craft Holy symbols. Many top crafters still use this method to craft, as it is cheap and easily accessible. Start by mining Silver over at West Varrock Mine. Since Silver is easy to mine, for low-level crafters, Holy Symbols are the best way for you to advance with until you can make Tiaras at level 23 crafting. The closest Furnace to a Bank would be the Furnace located at Al-Kharid; it is only a few steps away from the bank.

Members: Once you are Level 10 Crafting, Flax is the fastest and cheapest way to level up your crafting. The nearest Flax Plant to a Bank is over at Lletya; there is a field of flax just outside the bank. There is a Flax Plant just outside the bank, never was picking flax done with so much speed. After collecting the amount of Flax you want, head to Lumbridge and spin your Flax on the spinning wheel located on the second floor of Lumbridge Castle. A bank is located on the top floor of the castle, so this would be the quickest method for spinning. Unlike Flax, Silver crafting requires a lot of time spent mining Silver. Experiments have proven Flax crafting faster than silver crafting.

Level 28 - 50

Non-Members: Non-Members should craft Hard Leather Bodies once they reach level 28 crafting. Since your Crafting level is still quite low, Hard Leather Body are more effective since you do not need many Cow Hides to advance to higher levels. If you do not mind buying Cow Hides, which costs 80-200gp each, buy around 2,600 cow hides, which will help you level up till 50 crafting. If you do not wish to spend money, another alternative way is to stick with crafting Tiaras and mine the Silver by yourself. Experiments have proven that crafting Hard Leather Body is almost twice faster than crafting Tiaras.

Members: Stick with spinning Flax as they still give very fast experience.

Level 50 - 63

Non-Members: Since you will need too many hides just to level up crafting now, crafting Tiaras is the most effective way. Especially because of the fact that you can now enter the Crafting Guild (level 40 required), which is the fastest place to mine Silver; you will be able to obtain Silver more efficiently.

Members: Stick with either Flax or start crafting unpowered orbs over at Entrana and banking them if you plan to craft battlestaves in the future, or go for Bullseye Lantern Lenses for the highest glass crafting xp. Because, at level 50 crafting, you will need to spin almost 1,000 flax just to level up. By banking the Orbs, when you reach the required crafting level to craft battlestaves, you will have the Orbs to make it.

For Orb crafting, it is best that you bank the Unpowered Orbs, as they will be extremely useful when you can craft battlestaves. Here is one of the best ways to craft orbs:

  1. Collect seaweed in Shilo Village until you have your desired amount.
  2. Cook all your seaweed on the stove in Zanaris (The Lost City).
  3. Withdraw 14 piles of Soda Ash and 14 buckets.
  4. Walk over to the sand pit and fill the buckets with sand.
  5. Walk to the furnace and make the Molten Glass.
  6. Repeated steps 3-6 until all the Soda Ash becomes Molten Glass.
  7. At any bank, withdraw a Blowing Pipe and 27 pieces of Molten Glass and shape them into Orbs.

If you are interested on power crafting with Orbs, Entrana is the place for you as the Sandpit, Furnace, Range and seaweed spawn are all very close together. Simply drop the Orbs you make and repeat the process.

Level 63 - 99

Non-Members: To reach level 99, your best option is to mine and craft Tiaras. If you do not mind wasting money, buy Silver ore and smelt them into bars before making them into Tiaras. Another option would be stick with Hard Leather Bodies while buying the Cowhides/Hard Leather from other people.

Members: This is where the fun starts to come in. You can now craft Full Green Dragonhide Leather. Although the exp rewarded is 2 times faster than crafting battlestaves, the time spent collecting Dragon hides unbalances its overall experience rating. To collect a full load of Dragon hide takes anywhere from 8-25 minutes, while getting a full load of Orbs charged would only take 3-5 minutes maximum. If you have a low combat level and don't mind spending money buying dragon hides from other players, crafting Dragonhide Armour is the best and fastest way to go. If not, the most economical way is crafting battlestaves.

The nearest and safest Obelisk is the Air Obelisk compared to the other three Obelisks. Thus, crafting Air battlestaves is the only type of battlestaff you should craft, as the others would be extremely tedious. Here is the fastest way to craft battlestaves:

  1. Camp at the Air Obelisk, located at Edgeville Dungeon.
  2. Get a trustworthy friend to help you make bank runs, while you stay at the Air Obelisk.
  3. Trade Air Orbs for Blank Orbs with your friend.
  4. Withdraw all your Nature Runes, 20 Orbs and wield your Fire Staff.
  5. Head to either Zaff's Staff Shop or the Magic Guild shop and buy 5 battlestaves.
  6. Attach your Orbs to the battlestaves and High Alchemy them.
  7. Server-hop and repeat steps 5-6.

Crafting can be expensive, especially if you buy your materials from sellers. If you get the supplies yourself, though it can become profitable or you can at least break even. The cheapest thing that gives good, fast experience is regular leather for non-members or flax for members. If you have a lot of money and wish to invest in crafting, silver on f2p or dragonhides on members is the way to go.
