1.0 - Introduction
Prayer is a skill that summons the powers of the RuneScape gods to help you in combat. To train this skill you must pay tribute to the gods by burying bones. The more bones you bury, the higher your prayer level will become, allowing you to access more powerful prayers to use at your disposal. However, as you use these prayers, your level will slowly drop (ex. 30/40) until it is at zero (0/40). You then cannot use any prayers until you recharge your prayer to it's maximum (40/40). Prayer at high levels can be very helpful in battles. If you want to try to take on a high level monster for better drops, Protect from Melee can save your life. Prayer is invaluable in any quest or areas where there are high level monsters that need to be slain. Also, if you want to test out if you can kill a monster, but you want some kind of back-up, prayer is the answer. If you are having trouble killing it, prayer can act as your insurance by either helping you do more damage or protect you long enough for you to run away or teleport. 2.0 - Basics of Praying
2.1 - The Prayer Menu
The prayer menu is located on the right hand side of your screen right beside the magic menu. The symbol is a small star. When the prayer window is open, you will see many symbols. Here is how you can tell their status.
2.2 - Recharging Your Prayer Points
When a prayer is turned on, the effect will immediately take place. However, if you leave a prayer activated your level will begin to drop. The higher level the prayer being used, the quicker your prayer will be reduced. Multiple prayers will also cause a significant increase in prayer reduction. Once your prayer points reach 0, you will not be able to use prayer any longer. You must then recharge you prayer level. There are a few different methods you can use to do this. Altars
These will recharge all of your prayer points. They are located throughout the churches of RuneScape as well as in many other places and are marked by the icon on the minimap. To pray at an altar, simply click on it and your prayer points will be restored. Note: You will also find altars in the player owned homes of some higher leveled players. Certain altars will even give you a bonus of extra prayer points. They are:
Potions
Potions can be made by RuneScape members using the Herblore skill.
3.0 - The Prayers and Drain Rates
There are many different prayers that will do many different things. Here is a complete list of the prayers you can perform in RuneScape: When you turn a prayer on it will start draining your prayer points until you have zero prayer points, and you will have to recharge your prayer. This chart also indicates how fast each will drain your prayer points.
4.0 - Prayer Apparel
When you wear clothing that has prayer properties, your prayer equipment stat will rise. Your prayer equipment stat is located in the equipment stat window. The higher your prayer equipment stat is the longer it takes for you to run out of prayer points. This means you will be able to use prayers for longer without having to recharge your prayer points. There is only one metal-type of armor which is prayer-based: white knight equipment. All pieces of white knight weapons and armour give a +1 boost to prayer, with the mace giving +4. Below is a table that shows the other equipment that gives you a prayer boost:
5.0 - Gaining Prayer Experience
There are a few ways you can get prayer experience. You can get prayer experience by killing monsters and picking up their bones then burying them. Another way, exclusive to members, is by burning the remains of Shades. Some quests will reward a player with prayer experience. One last way, also for members only, is by killing Ghasts. 5.1 - Bone Burying
When you kill monsters in RuneScape you will usually get a set of bones. To bury bones you must have picked them up so that they are in your inventory. Then you can either right click on the bones and select "Bury" or simply left click them. Different types of bones give different experience values. Unlike other skills there is no prayer requirement for burying different bones, so no matter what your level is you can bury any types of bones you like. Here is a list of all the bones you can find in RuneScape:
1 :: Long Bones and Curved Bones Long bones and curved bones can be obtained by any monster who drops big bones. If you take Long bones and curved bones to Barlak in Dorgesh-Kaan, he will pay you and give you construction xp for them if your construction level is over 30. (1000gp and 1500xp for long bones, 2000gp and 3000xp for curved bones) 5.2 - Shade Burning (Members Only)
The burning of the shades at Mort'ton is rather slow prayer experience, but you can get cool rewards by using the keys that appear after burning shades. By burning the remains of shades at the dungeon in Mort'ton you can gain both prayer and firemaking experience. This is for members only. Here is a table of how much each of the shade remains gives you after you burn it:
5.3 - Ghasts
If you kill Ghasts in Mort Myre Swamp, you can get 30 prayer experience per Ghast killed. You must have completed the Nature Spirit quest to get the necessary equipment. 5.4 - The Ectofuntus
The Ectofuntus is an extremely worthwhile method of training your prayer, if you can afford to buy and grind a lot of Dragon bones. This is because it multiplies the number of experience you normally get, by four; so for a dragon bone, you get 288 XP instead of 72 XP. This method involves collecting buckets of slime, grinding your bones, and worshipping them at the Ectofuntus in Port Phasmatys. There are many methods that you can use to worship your bones efficiently, but revealed below is known to be the most efficient. This method involves buying 65 pots, and 150 buckets (or less depending on how many bones you're going to grind). These can be bought easily from the Port Phasmatys general store, although you need an Amulet of Ghostspeak to speak to the general store owner. You will also need an ectophial, and a number of rings of dueling - at least 10 - so you can teleport to and from the castle wars arena. Start off at the castle wars bank chest, and withdraw your ectophial, a ring of dueling, and 26 empty buckets. Empty your ectophial, refill it at the Ectofuntus, then open the trapdoor. Climb down, and head to the bottom floor (use the agility shortcut if you can). Fill all your buckets with slime (there is a fill-all buckets option to make this easier), then use your ring of dueling to get back to the castle wars arena. Repeat this process until all your buckets are filled with slime. Once you've done this, clear your inventory and withdraw your filled ectophial, ring of dueling, 13 empty pots and 13 of your bones. Teleport to the Ectofuntus, refill your ectophial, and then head up the stairs. Right click your bones, and use them with the bone grinder. Then wind the wheel to grind the bones. Now empty the ground bones into one of your pots. Continue this process until your pots are full of bonemeal, then teleport to the castle wars arena. Bank and repeat, remembering to refill your ectophial each time, and withdraw a new ring of dueling as your old ones disintegrate. When you have filled all 65 pots, clear your inventory again at the castle wars bank chest. This time withdraw 13 buckets of slime, 13 pots of bonemeal, your ectophial, and ring of dueling. Teleport to the Ectofuntus, with your Amulet of Ghostspeak on. Worship at the altar ten times, then drop an empty bucket and collect your tokens from a ghost disciple. Then worship the remaining three pots, and teleport back to the castle wars arena. Bank and repeat, keeping your pots and buckets for future use. 5.5 - Chapels
With the release of Construction came the ability for players to make special altars that you are able to worship bones at. This practice has been dominating the ectofuntus technique, as it is much less of a hassle if you have a higher level altar to worship at. The best location to travel to and from a bank at, would be Yanille. The bank is just east of the POH portal, making it far easier than having to teleport around as when using the Ectofuntus. There are three types of burners: Regular, Mahogany and Marble. See the Construction guide for information on how to construct them. Dependant on your altar type and the amount and level of incense burners you have lit, you will be awarded more prayer experience for the bones you worship. The values shown in the table below are based on using Marble burners. Where it shows "##%" below, simply divide the percentage by 100, then multiply the regular bone experience given by the resulting number. Example: Divide 225% by 100 (or just put a decimal point after the first number) to get 2.25, then multiply that by the regular bone XP to get the XP given when worshipping.
6.0 - Training Methods and Locations
This part of the guide tells you where to train prayer at what combat Level. Remember that since these methods are generally the easiest ways to train there will be many other there to accompany you. This may slow down the prayer leveling process. Note: Leveling your prayer in this manner is not as effective as buying large amounts of bones and burying them. This section is to show people where to gather bones and bury them. Combat Levels 3-39
Free Players: The best places for you are "Chicken Coops". Both these places give good prayer XP/hour. The monsters are easy to kill and provide relatively good combat XP up to, and even beyond level 39. Again, do not rely on just training sessions here to gain prayer XP, pick up every bone you see and bury it. Combat Levels 40-49
Free Players: Although you could still train at Chicken Coops and get relatively good XP, I would recommend going to the Giant's Cavern which is in the Edgeville Dungeon. Combat Levels 50+
Free Players: You should train at the Chaos Temple or the Bone Yard in the wilderness. At levels higher than 50 you should be able to fend off most Player Killers in this level of wild long enough to escape (teleport or run). However, you should try to bring just 3 items and a minimal food so that you do not loose anything important. 7.0 - Miscellaneous Information
Random Events
When you are burying bones, a Zombie or Shade may appear and attack. It's level will depend on your's, so if you are a higher level you can expect Zombies in the level 120 and 159 range. If you are of a lower level the Zombies will also be significantly lower. Zombies can drop various amounts of Fishing Bait, 35 Chaos Runes, 2-6 Big Bones, 1 Dragon Bone and 1 Big Bone. Beware that these monsters are very strong so "Protect from Melee" is recommended. Shades drop shade robes which give a little prayer bonus. These monsters are also very strong so "Protect from Melee" is also recommended. When burying bones, you may get the Gravedigger random event. Leo the Gravedigger will take you to a graveyard and will ask you to help put the coffins under the correct gravestone. When opening a coffin, you will see items that the person had when dead. The gravestone will show a rotating picture that will give you an idea of which coffin should be placed under the gravestone. For example, a chef hat would stand for a cook, so the cook's coffin should go under the gravestone. When you are done, talk to Leo and he will reward you with Zombie clothing or the emotes Zombie Walk or Zombie Dance. The Monastery
Although there is no specific guild for people with high prayer, there is a special area in the Monastery (north-east of Falador) for people with higher than average prayer. If you have level 31 or higher prayer you can enter the second floor of the monastery, which is often referred to as the Prayer Guild. In this guild you can find a Monks Robe respawn (both top and bottom), a special altar which gives +2 extra prayer points when you recharge there (so if you pray at it with 33/44 prayer, your prayer recharges to 46/44), and Brother Jered, who will enchant your Holy Symbols of Saradomin. Holy Wrench
Upon completion of the Rum Deal quest, you will receive a Holy Wrench. The Holy Wrench will restore an additional 1-2 prayer points when drinking a Prayer Potion. It may also slow prayer drain. It is a very useful item when PKing, "Barrowing", finishing Fight Caves or any other action that requires prayer or prayer potions. 8.0 - Quests for Experience
