1.0 - Introduction

Have you always wanted a cool-looking hat with colourful feathers on it? Well, here's your chance: Chompy Bird Hunting. To be able to play this mini game, you must have completed the Big Chompy Bird Hunting. This mini game is fun, but very time consuming.

2.0 - Finding the Chompies

There are two methods which you could use to reach the most popular location of the Chompy Birds. Moreover, there are two locations where you are able to range Chompy Birds. The most commonly used location is found just south of Rantz's cave. The relatively unknown location is found by the teak trees, south-west of Castle Wars. This location has many swamp toads, but no wolves to kill, hindering your ability to fletch ogre arrows nearby. However, it is closer to the bank, and as a result is the better location for this mini game, providing you have enough Ogre arrows to last you long enough.

Method 1 - Teleporting

The easiest method by far is that of teleporting to the Castle Wars arena by using a ring of dueling. Simply rub the ring and choose Castle Wars, and you will appear near the bank in the lobby, where you can withdraw the supplies you will need. Exit the lobby, go down the bridge to the south, and continue south past Jiggig, then head either west (to the relatively un-used location) or south-east to Rantz's cave.

Alternatively, you could use Watchtower Teleport, requiring level 58 magic, and walk through Yanille, and south of Gu'Tanoth to the Hunting grounds.

Method 2 - Gnome Glider

Upon completion of the One Small Favour quest, you are able to use the Gnome Glider to reach Lemantolly Undri, or, Feldip Hills. This glider comes out just south of Gu'Tanoth, very close to the Hunting grounds. Once you arrive, just head east. However, you should withdraw all your items before-hand, to save you having to walk to the Castle Wars bank

Prior to setting out, ensure that you have all the required items denoted below, to save some time.

Inventory

You will always need these items with you when you go Chompy Hunting.

  • Ogre Bellows
  • Ogre Bow or Composite Bow
  • Minimum of 500 feathers (Only if you plan on making your arrows before and in between hunts)
  • Chisel
  • Knife
  • Dragonhide armour
  • Glory amulet OR Ring of Dueling.
  • Mithril axe or better

Optional Items
  • 1,000 Ogre Arrows (you can make more while you are there)
  • Brutal Arrows; any type
  • Composite Ogre Bow (this bow requires completion of Zogre Flesh Eaters. It is faster than a regular Ogre bow.)
  • Good weapon - to kill wolves

3.0 - Hunting

Now that you've reached the hunting grounds, it's time to start the hunt.

Preparing

If you have already brought your Ogre arrows, you can skip ahead to the baiting section. For those who haven't brought pre-made Ogre arrows: don't worry. You can make some right next to the hunting grounds.

Use your Ogre Bellows on the swamp bubble, use the bellows on a swamp toad, and pick it up. Repeat this process three times. Also keep in mind that it is possible to obtain more than one bellows to save time. As long as you do not have any other bellows in your inventory, you can go back to the chest and get another one.

Making Ogre Arrows

You only have feathers, now what to do? Well, don't worry: you have everything needed to make arrows nearby. West of the hunting grounds is a swamp, and around it, you will see a clump of Achey trees. Cut as many Achey logs as you want and use a knife on them to get Ogre shafts (each log makes a random amount of 2-6 shafts). Keep doing this until you have at least 100 shafts.

Now for the arrowheads; skulking around the swamp are some level 64 Grey Wolves. Wield your weapon, and attack them. When they're killed, pick up their bones. Use the chisel on the bones to make arrowheads. Repeat this process until you have an almost equal number of shafts and arrowheads (similarily to shafts, each bone makes a random amount of 2-6 arrowheads)

The same process as fletching regular arrows applies here: use the feathers on the shafts (each shaft requires 4 feathers), then use the arrowheads on the headless arrows. You now have your Ogre Arrows.

Beginning the hunt

Drop one inflated toad at one of three different locations in the hunting area. Now stand far enough away to be out of view of the Chompy, but still be able to see the swamp toads. If you plan on mass killing Chompies, drop several, and use a Composite Bow.

When the Chompy Bird appears, there will be a yellow arrow hovering over it. Kill this Chompy with your ogre arrows and bow, then go over and pick up the features, any dropped arrows, and also pluck the Chompy. Your bow will automatically record the kill, which you are able to see as well. Note that you cannot pick up the Swamp toads that are remaining as they will explode, and you'll have to go get more.

4.0 - Chompy Hats

Not only is acquiring one of these hats simple, but it's also fun and a good way to obtain feathers. Chompy Hunting is one of the greatest mini-games, and you'll soon think so too. Below is a table of all the different kinds of Chompy Hats:

5.0 - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I lost my Ogre Bellows! What do I do?

A: Walk north of Rantz until you see a cave entrance, enter it and open the chest on the north-west corner (Picture).

Q: How long does it take to kill a Chompy?

A: This depends on your Ranged level. Level 40-50 Rangers can kill them in 2 hits generally, 60 and above could easily kill in 1 hit. Picking up arrows would be a good idea so you can reuse them.

Q: What levels are required to chop Achey trees and fletch them?

A: Ogre arrow shafts/headless arrows/arrows all require level 5 fletching. Achey trees require level 1 woodcutting to chop.

Q: What ranged level is required to use ogre bows?

A: Level 30 Ranged and above is required.

Q: What happens if you lose your bow? Or get a Chompy Hat? Does the Kill Count reset?

A: If you lose your Ogre Bow, speak to Rantz and he'll give you a new one for a small charge of 500-600 coins. Your kill count does NOT reset; the same applies for getting a Chompy Hat. Your kill count remains the same. If you get the kill count for the final hat, you will receive all other hats as well.
