1.0 - Introduction
Fighting the monsters in The TzHaar city can be a very expensive process; the monsters hit hard and prayer potions are very expensive. The two main drops that all TzHaar slayers want are Obsidian Shields and Obsidian capes. But you can also get Obsidian Mauls, Maces, Swords, Knives and Throwing Disks. You can also get Obsidian Staffs but they are much harder work. This guide will show you how to fight in the caves effectively and efficiently, no matter your combat style.
There are a number of ways to get to the TzHaar City. The first and foremost would be on foot. The TzHaar City's entrance is located within the Karamja Volcano. Another common method to reach the TzHaar City is to use Fairy Rings and the code BLP.
2.0 - Skills and Equipment
The following are recommendations only. They are only guidelines to surviving and training at the TzHaars.
Armour with a high crush defence is a very good idea, with your ideal combat level being around 75 onwards. However if you are going to only slay the TzHaar-Xil then you dont need to focus so much on the crush defence.
The best way to slay TzHaars is with melee, there are mage/range spots but they arent very good.
Barrows are most likely the easiest way to train on TzHaars. The ideal Barrows armours to use on them are Torags, Guthans and Dharoks. Dharoks will do the job, but it is possible for even level 100+ players to die against TzHaars because they weren't careful. Remember the max hit for TzHaars is in the range of 14-16. If you use Dharoks make sure to use protect against melee earlier on than against other monsters, due to the risk.
Initiate or Proselyte
Using Initiate or Proselyte armour saves the most money out of all equipment sets because these armours reduce the rate your prayer is drained when using the protect from melee prayer. This means that you save money from buying prayer potions. However, this method is not the best in terms of training. Initiate or Proselyte armours are also extremely cheap when compared to Torags or Dharoks. This method is also recommended to those who do not have high enough defence to equip barrows.
|
Requirements:
- 43+ Prayer: Needed to use the Protect from Melee Prayer.
- 20 defence: Needed to equip Initiate Armour.
- Slug Menace Quest: Needed to equip Proselyte Armour.
- Recruitment Drive Quest: Needed to equip Initiate Armour.
|
Recommendations:
- Level 80+ combat: Ability to survive in the TzHaar City.
- Some good food: Lobsters, swordfish, monkfish or sharks.
- Horror of the Deep Quest: Needed to equip a magic book.
|
Head: Proselyte sallet, or Initiate helm
Cape: Legends cape or Obsidian Cape
Amulet: Unholy Symbol, Holy Symbol, or Amulet of Glory
Chest: Proselyte hauberk, or Initiate platemail
Gloves: Barrows Gloves, Klank's Gauntlets, Family Crest Gauntlets, or White (Knight) Gloves
Shield: Any prayer book will do but I recommend the Unholy Book (Zamorak)
Legs: Proselyte cuisse/tasset, or Initiate platelegs
Boots: White (Knight) Boots, Rune Boots or Climbing Boots
Note: Don't bring a ring of life because it can be a nuisance and a ring of wealth is advised. |
Barrows
By far, the best armour to train at TzHaars is Barrows. Guthans and Dharoks are good choices, but because of its high crush defence, Torags is the best Barrows armour suited for TzHaar training.
|
Requirements:
- 70+ combat: Needed to defeat and survive the Tzhaars.
- 70 defence: Needed to epuip Barrows Armour.
Head: Torag's Helm
Cape: Legends cape, Fire cape, obsidian cape
Amulet: Amulet of Glory
Chest: Torag's Platebody
Gloves: Barrow Gloves or Dragon Gloves
Shield: Rune defender or obsidian shield
Legs: Torag Legs
Boots: Rune boots
Note: A ring of recoil can be very helpful. Don't bring a ring of life if you plan to Dharok and a ring of wealth is advised. |
Recommendations:
- 43+ Prayer: Needed to use the Protect from Melee Prayer.
- Rum Deal quest: Needed to have access to a holy wrench.
- Level 80+ combat
- Some good food(lobster or higher)
- Level 70+ attack, strength, defence and hitpoints.
|
Rune
For those who can't afford barrows, but still want a strong armour, rune armour is the best. Rune does not cost as much as barrows, but it also has no effect to your prayer. If you do plan on wearing rune armour, expect to be hit hard and pack food.
|
Requirements:
- 70+ combat: Needed to defeat and survive the Tzhaars.
- 40 defence: Needed to epuip rune armour.
- Completion of the Dragon Slayer Quest to equip a rune platebody.
|
Recommendations:
- 43+ Prayer: Needed to use the Protect from Melee Prayer.
- Level 80+ combat
- Some good food(lobster or higher)
- Level 60+ attack, strength, defence and hitpoints.
|
Head: Rune Full Helmet
Cape: Legends Cape, Fire cape, Obsidian Cape
Amulet: Amulet of Glory, Amulet of Strength, Amulet of Power, Amulet of Fury
Chest: Rune platebody or Rune chainbody
Gloves: Barrow Gloves, Dragon gloves
Shield: Rune kiteshield, obsidian shield, rune defender
Legs: Rune platelegs
Boots: Rune boots
Note: A ring of recoil may help, ring of wealth is advised. |
Range
If you do range, it is a good idea to use a similar layout to this and it is likely that the enchanted pearl bolt effect has increased effect on them since they are "fiery." Any bolts that have a good effect against monsters will do the job. Furthermore having 80+ range will allow you to kill far, far more and much faster too.
|
Requirements:
- 70+ combat: Needed to defeat and survive the Tzhaars.
- 40 defence: Needed to epuip dragonhide armour.
- Completion of the Dragon Slayer Quest to equip a green dragonhide body.
Head: Ranger Helm or Robin Hat.
Cape: Obsidian cape
Amulet: Amulet of Glory

Gloves: The best dragonhide vambraces you can equip
Shield: A God book is helpful if using a crossbow.
Legs: The best dragonhide chaps you can equip
Boots: Robin Hood Boots
Note: An archer ring can help, but a ring of wealth is advised.
|
Recommendations:
- Level 80+ range
- The best dragonhide you can use.
- Some good food(lobster or higher)
- Level 60+ hitpoints.

3.0 - Tzhaar Monsters
There are four specific Tzhaar creatures you can train on:
TzHaar-Hur |
|
Combat: | 74 |
Hitpoints: | 80 |
Members: | Yes |

Examine: | Looks like a craftsman of some kind. |
Obsidian Drops: | None |
Other Drops: | All uncut gems (sapphire - diamond), Thread, Hammer, Pot, Chisel, Knife, Gold ore, Jug, Tokkul, Various runes. |
Notes: | Unless you plan to train and not get an obsidian drop, Hur are not for you. These are the ones you'd want to Guthan with if you're low on health. Note that other TzHaars will attempt to defend Hur and will attack you if you attack Hur. |
TzHaar-Mej |
|
Combat: | 103 |
Hitpoints: | 100 |
Members: | Yes |
Attack Style: | Magic and Melee |
Examine: | Appears to be some kind of mystic. |
Obsidian Drops: | Staff and Cape |
Other Drops: | All uncut gems (sapphire - diamond), Thread, Hammer, Pot, Chisel, Knife, Gold ore, Jug,
Tokkul. |
Notes: | Since Mej attack with Melee and Magic, it would be wise to use the right prayers when attacking each type. Note that other TzHaars will attempt to defend Mej and will attack you if you attack Mej.
TzHaar-Xil |
|
Combat: | 133 |
Hitpoints: | 120 |
Attack Style: | Melee and Range |
Examine: | Doesn't look very social. |
Obsidian Drops: | Knives, Cape, Sword and Throwing Rings |
Other Drops: | Tokkul, All uncut gems (sapphire - diamond) |
Notes: | Xil are the best chance if you want to get an Obsidian drop. However, they require you use the protect from melee prayer or the protect from range prayer depending on their attack style.
TzHaar-Ket |
|
Combat: | 149 |
Hitpoints: | 140 |
Attack Style: | Melee |
Examine: | Must be a guard or something. |
Obsidian Drops: | Maul, Sword, Shield and Cape. |
Other Drops: | All uncut gems (sapphire - diamond) and
Tokkul. |
Notes: | The best tactic with the Ket is to either attack with a safe-spot or with melee prayers.
Note: All the TzHaars are non-aggressive.
4.0 - Strategy
- Go the fight caves; make sure your prayer is fully charged.
- Put on Protect from Melee and attack a monster if you are using the initiate layout. It's a good idea to kill TzHaar-Ket or TzHaar-Xil, as they have the better drops and they use melee attacks. Watch out for the TzHaar-Xil holding ranging rings. Either keep killing monsters until you run out of prayer or switch to using prayer when you run out of food. A good spot for fighting the monsters in the area just south of the bank.
- Once your prayer runs out, let a monster get you to around 20 HP. Once your HP is low run inside the fight caves.
- Once inside of the fight caves take all of your armour off and make sure that only your weapon is equipped. Attack the monsters until they kill you (don't worry; you won't lose any items). Once you die you will appear outside; you will be given some Tokkul and you will have HP and Prayer fully restored!
There are two safe-spots available to players that wish to range or mage. These spots are relatively safe and can save money because of using less prayer potions. Both safe-spots are nearby the gold mine (Picture).
5.0 - TzHaar Items
Each TzHaar Monster drops Tokkul, which can be used to purchase the elusive Obsidian Items. The following table shows each item, its price and its bonuses. Some of the items are made from the Onyx gem that can be brought from the city. It is also important to note when buying TzHaar items that wearing Karamja gloves attained from the Karamja Achievement diary can lower prices.

6.0 - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is this good combat experience?
A: It is mildly good combat experience; however, if you used food or prayer potions it would be faster (and more expensive).
Q: What is the difference between Proselyte and Initiate Armour?
A: Proselyte Armour is an upgrade of the original Initiate Armour. In order to obtain the Proselyte Armour, you must first complete Slug Menace.
Q: Is the TzHaar City multi combat?
A: Yes, you can attack TzHaars while other players are attacking them, the same with TzHaars attacking you. This can be useful for training since you can kill them in groups. |
