1.0 - Introduction

Dictionary: To prepare (food) for eating by applying heat.

To the common player of RuneScape, cooking is just a skill. However, to an expert chef, it is an art, a source of income, and an entertaining way to pass the time. Learn all about the meats, bread, pies, fish, and even more that you can create with a high level of cooking in this guide.

2.0 - The Basics of Cooking

As stated before, cooking is the preparation of food by adding heat, so obviously you will need some sort of stove. In RuneScape, you will need access to a cooking range in order to cook. There are plenty of ranges in RuneScape, so you should not have much trouble finding one. Normally you cannot use regular fires for cooking, however all types of fish can be cooked over this heat source. You should also note that there is a chance of burning food when you are cooking; however, this will happen less often as your cooking level rises.

You cannot bake most goods without some sort of container. Imagine trying to make a cake without a Cake Tin! Here is a list of the common items used to contain foods.

Upon completion of the Evil Dave sub quest of the Recipe of Disaster quest, players are able to make a new type of stew to increase or reduce stats. Simply use your cat to kill hellrats, and they will drop a coloured spice canister. Each canister can have up to four doses, three of which you will need to put in a stew. To determine the effect of the stew with the spice, simply multiply the number of doses you put in by 2. Note that your levels can go up or down at random when you drink this stew. That said, if you put three doses of red spice in your stew, your attack, strength, defence, ranged and magic levels could go up or down six levels - each skill being different. The table below shows what spice affects which skills.

4.0 - Drinks

RuneScape sports a wide range of ales, beers, and stat enhancing drinks. This section outlines the Gnome Cocktails, and beers made using the Dwarven method of Brewing.

4.1 - Brewing

Brewing is a branch of the cooking and farming skills. One farms their own herbs, or hops, and uses a brewery to ferment them into various beers, ales, or other stat enhancing drinks. There are many useful and interesting drinks to quench your thirst within the world of RuneScape. Brewing can be very tedious, and it can be much easier to buy the brewable items from a bar or inn if possible.

The brewing information of Dwarven style drinks is below.

5.0 - Training Methods and Locations

Although this guide talks about many different recipes, cooking fish is usually the preferred method of training. The reasoning behind this is that fish are much easier to obtain then gathering all the ingredients used in pies, pizzas, etc. So, to train cooking, always try to cook the best fish you can. You can do so by fishing them and then cooking what you catch, or by buying the uncooked fish first. Usually lobsters and sharks are the most commonly traded fish, so if you would like to buy raw fish and then cook them, try to find players that are willing to sell these raw fish. You can also sell these fish cooked to players wishing to use them as food during combat.

The best training process is quite simple, but unfortunately, quite boring. Find a range that is close to a bank or just use your tinderbox with some logs to make a fire. Use your raw fish on the range or fire to cook your fish. Repeat until all of your fish are cooked, and then grab some more raw fish from your bank account.

The best locations for cooking are the following:

  • Few ranges are very close to a bank on the free worlds. Your best bet is to make a fire to cook in close proximity to a bank. The closest ranges to banks are in Al-Kharid, Edgeville or Lumbridge. The closest permanent fire to a bank in free RuneScape in Draynor Village at Ned's house.
  • On member worlds, there is a range very close to the bank in Catherby and the Lumbridge Cellar. There is also a permanent fire next to a banker in Rogue's Den, considerably closer to each other than Catherby. The Rogues Den can be accessed through the pub in Burthorpe. If the Rogue's Den banker causes you problems by moving a lot because of other players, you can also try the Nardah oven right next to the bank. You do not need to wear desert clothing while in the village, and the bank stalls are permanent. Nardah is a much more quiet location if you wish to cook in peace.
  • When you cook your food in Lumbridge castle kitchen, you receive a 10% less chance on burning your food. The down side, however, it's not that close to a bank because you have to go down in the basement or up two flights of steps to get to a bank.

Where to buy/sell food:

The Official Forums are far from a bad place to make any of the trades necessary, as they are very active and fast. The Herblore, Farming, and Food board on our Community site is also a good place to make transactions. If you're pondering about ingame locations however, Edgeville on low numbered worlds (1-12) are excellent places for selling sharks and lobsters, especially cooked.

Level 1 - 15:

If you want to be as self-sufficient as possible, you should begin cooking by also training fishing. Take a small net, axe, and tinderbox to Draynor Village, and begin fishing shrimp in the river south of the bank, cooking as you go. There's no point in keeping these cooked fish, so you're best saving time by dropping them when they're cooked. At level 5 fishing you will be able to move on to sardines. A Fishing rod and a stock of bait is required, both of which can be picked up at the fish shop in Port Sarim, just west of Draynor Village. Don't worry if you're cooking level is lower than your fishing (due to burning) - Sardines only require level 1 cooking, which you will find is a common trend throughout your training, in that fish require lower cooking levels than fishing levels. At level 10 you will start picking up Herring as well. Keep cooking and dropping as you go, until you reach level 15.

Alternatively, you can stick with your small net and shrimp until level 15, or you can camp out in the Lumbridge cow farm area and pick up the meat people leave on the ground.

  • Level 1 Cooking, Level 1 Fishing: Shrimp
  • Level 1 Cooking, Level 5 Fishing: Sardines
  • Level 5 Cooking, Level 10 Fishing: Herring

Level 15 - 40:

You'll need a fishing level of 20 to continue properly. Keep training on sardines and herring if you need to. You'll now begin fly fishing, which is some of the quickest experience you'll encounter in the game. Get a decent stock of feathers - 500 should be enough to get you from level 20 to 40 fishing - and a fly fishing rod. Free players will also need an axe (equipped) and a tinderbox, while members have the option of using a stock of Rings of Dueling to bank their fish. For free players, head to the river banks of the Barbarian Village, just north of the bridge, where you'll find several fly fishing spots. You can bank your fish in Edgeville bank, though this is time consuming and not really worth it. Members can either head to Shilo Village, which requires you to have done the Shilo Village quest, or down to the Castle Wars arena. North of the arena is a large lake, on the shores of which are several fly fishing spots. You can either fish and cook, or fish and bank using Rings of Dueling.

For lower level chefs who have access to the Cooks' Guild or have a lot of grapes stored up in their banks, the best experience is making wine as it gives 200xp per successful jug and the Cooks' Guild has a grape spawn, jug spawn and water source so you never need to leave!

For lower level chefs who do not have access to the Cooks' Guild, one of the best ways is to go to the cow farm in Lumbridge, and cook the raw meat that people leave laying around, you will find an endless supply to the uncooked meat. It is also recommended that you cook trout/salmon, as they will provide you with minimal money loss, along with quick cooking experience for your levels.

Level 40-99:

Cooking lobsters at the start of level 40 is the fastest experience. The problem that lies herein is that you'll burn a high percentage of the lobsters you attempt to cook. You could continue with trout and salmon for a while. A decision you need to make is whether or not you want to spend a fair bit on this goal. Continuing the entire way to 99 with lobsters is the most expensive, but it won't take as long if cooking other fish. Switching to monkfish at around 80 will help you avoid burning a lot of them, and save you time. You could start sharks at this level as well, but you'll waste a lot of money burning them. To avoid burning a lot of sharks, start at around level 90 with cooking gauntlets. At level 94, you will stop burning sharks (With the gauntlets) and have the easiest route from 94-99 to be burn free. You may however lose a bit of money cooking sharks, as the prices for them are continually dropping and rising. It is best to stick with lobsters, as that way you will know how much you will be losing from 94 to 99 cooking.

Another tip if you're cooking fish, especially higher leveled fish such as lobster, swordfish, bass or shark is many players will trade their raw fish for your cooked. They may not have the level to cook or are too lazy and will happily trade so they can continue on with what they want to do. This makes training on these high level fish much easier - especially if you can find someone who it constantly willing to trade their raw fish for your cooked.

Yet another strategy is to cook chickens. As you can quickly kill them, and you can save their feathers to sell them, this isn't a bad alternative. The Champions Guild is the best place to do this, as the range is right next to the chicken pen, and you may quickly sell your cooked chickens to get rid of them faster than dropping. Afterwards, you may sell all the feathers you collected for a profit.

6.0 - Miscellaneous
Cooking Gauntlets (Members Only)
Zybez RuneScape Help's Screenshot of Cooking Gauntlets

After the Family Crest quest, you will obtain some "Steel Gauntlets". The Family Crest quest guide explains all three options you have with the gauntlets. However, you are able to turn these Gauntlets into Cooking Gauntlets.

When equipped, these Gauntlets will add an effective 10 levels to your cooking level when cooking Lobsters, Bass, Swordfish, Monkfish, and Sharks. This means that there you have less of a chance of burning the food.

Crossbow Strings
Zybez RuneScape Help's Screenshot of a Crossbow String

As crossbows require a stronger form of string than the bowstrings used for regular bows, players will need to use "sinew" to string their crossbows. To make sinew, simply use beef or bear meat on range, and choose the option to dry it out into sinew. Once you have this, you can spin it at a spinning wheel to create a crossbow string.
